Road traffic accidents (RTAs) remain one of the leading causes of head injuries and fatalities in India, particularly among children and young adults. According to recent reports by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India records over 4.6 lakh road accidents every year, resulting in more than 1.5 lakh deaths, with a significant proportion of these caused by head and spinal injuries. Alarmingly, two-wheeler riders account for nearly 45% of these fatalities, largely due to the non-use of helmets.

Driven by its mission to prevent head injuries and improve outcomes for survivors, the Indian Head Injury Foundation (IHIF) has developed a comprehensive, award-winning initiative focused on awareness, education, and protection to combat this public health crisis.

Over the years, IHIF has:

  • Educated more than 5 lakh school children and their parents on the importance of road safety and responsible road behaviour.
  • Distributed over 3 lakh ISI-marked helmets free of cost to school children and their parents whose primary mode of transport is a two-wheeler, in exchange for their parents’ driving licence copies — ensuring both education and accountability.
  • Conducted interactive awareness sessions in schools and communities featuring road safety experts and first responders, demonstrating the importance of helmet use, pedestrian safety, and first aid.
  • Organized hands-on demonstrations to teach children and the public about safe road habits, seatbelt use, and emergency response during accidents.

IHIF’s continuous work in this field has been internationally recognized, winning the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Award in 2017 in the category of Non-Communicable Diseases and the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in 2020.

Through these sustained efforts, IHIF aims to reduce the incidence of traumatic brain and spinal injuries, while fostering a culture of responsibility, awareness, and safety among India’s youth and their families. This initiative reflects IHIF’s unwavering commitment to saving lives and shaping a safer, more conscious society by integrating education, behavioural change, and protective action at the community level.
